Nothing could be more incomplete than this first instalment of a Register of Research. It is designed to prime the pump and to encourage individuals and institutions who are working in the field to write and make their research activities known. The very paucity of work revealed by the attempt to write a report for the Journal has already led to a stocktaking and attempts at forward planning in several places: a far more useful Register may thus be hoped for in our second issue, which goes to press at the end of June.
