Counselling and support for bereaved people who have a learning disability has historically been a neglected area, for many reasons. A voluntary organisation which positively embraced the challenges of working with a somewhat ‘different’ client group (people with learning disabilities) from a bereavement counselling perspective is offered as an example of positive practice. As other voluntary bereavement counselling organisations may seek to offer such bereaved individuals the counselling and support that they may require in the future, the role and function of the bereavement counsellor is identified and clarified and the characteristics of such organisations explored. Case illustrations are offered in an effort to help the reader to engage with the nature of the work undertaken, and the challenges involved.
