This article describes a young woman with mild learning disabilities, who developed a severe depression in the post‐partum period. Due to pre‐existing physical problems (renal problems) certain signs of her depressive illness, e.g. refusal to drink, were especially worrying. In this particular patient treatment with ECT was effective, leading to a relatively quick recovery. There is a lack of literature on the use of ECT in people with learning disabilities, and this report illustrates the value of ECT in certain circumstances. It also demonstrates the benefits of good liaison between the learning disabilities, general adult psychiatric and medical services.
