Emerson (1977) claims that as much as 50% of the emotional and management difficulties of people with learning disabilities, requiring crisis intervention, may be directly or indirectly associated with a death or loss. The current paper attempts to review the recent work on loss in the learning disabled. It uses a 10‐item categorical list adapted from Donnelly's (1990) 10 principles of counselling. The work was initially designed to be a practical guide for carers, following a request for help from nursing staff. As a consequence, this review includes a number of specific suggestions on how to care for people with learning disabilities who have suffered a recent loss.
