The EDY (Education of the Developmentally Young) course has had a major impact on staff training in learning disabilities since it was first published in 1981. Over 5000 staff and parents have completed the course and there are more than 500 registered instructors. Successful though the course continues to be, surveys of EDY users have suggested ways in which it could be revised and updated to take account of recent developments in the field. In this article we outline the changes that have been made to the new edition and put these in the context of planning and delivering effective services for people with severe learning disabilities.
