The principles of normalisation have offered a radical change from compliance to autonomy for many people. Skill‐teaching in each dimension of the person's daily living activities has been promoted as the prime role of the carer. Yet developing the skills and awareness needed for choice making for both the carer and the person with a learning disability have been largely neglected. This article offers ideas for interventions which can be introduced at any stage of the person's development along with a more general look at the choice‐making process.
