There is much research literature on pencil and paper and observational methods of assessing behaviour shown by people with mental handicaps, but little has been done to investigate the most common method of assessment – the interview. This paper presents an annotated, semi‐structured behavioural interview used to develop a functional analysis of challenging behaviour in an eight‐year‐old girl. The tentative functional analysis and potential treatment strategies derived are described.
