Developing a range of integrated leisure opportunities for young people with mental handicaps who live in “ordinary houses in ordinary streets” is important, and fun. My own experience suggests that what is needed is good planning and organisation, enough resources, and a shared commitment to integration. Transport, access, risks, and advance warning need to be considered. Issues include addressing staring and teasing, what sort of support to arrange, and learning from mistakes. Helping people enjoy their leisure time is an opportunity for staff to develop and use their special skills.
