There have been few reports in the literature of long‐term group psychotherapy programmes for people with mental handicaps. This paper describes a coordinated package of such programmes which have been in operation for over three years. It looks briefly at the function of verbal and art therapy groups, client selection and allocation, staff development, and administration. Some of the considerations for staff working with people who have mental handicaps in psychotherapy are discussed, together with the benefits of group psychotherapy for everyone involved.
