An anxiety management group, which used adaptations of traditional cognitive‐behavioural techniques, was offered to eight adults with mild or moderate mental handicaps. Group members reported that sharing their experiences of anxiety, and learning new skills, such as abdominal breathing and relaxation, were the most effective methods employed. Suggested changes for the organisation of future groups are considered.
