Pedestrian skills relating to crossing busy roads and using pedestrian crossings were taught to two women with severe mental handicaps. Training and assessment sessions were all held in real traffic conditions. The required target behaviours were trained using the techniques of role play, modelling, practice, shaping, and prompting. Base line, post‐training, and generalisation assessments were conducted in both conditions. The women's performances in all the sessions were video‐taped and analysed by two independent raters. Both women showed an improvement during training which was maintained at the post‐training and generalisation assessments.
