A survey of all informal carers of adults with mental handicaps in the Monklands District of Scotland was carried out to establish the usage and demand for respite care services from parents and carers. The survey provided a profile of 82 “main carers” who replied to a postal questionnaire. Most of them had used no formal or informal respite care services during the previous year. Most stated that their needs for respite were unmet.
