This paper argues for a re‐examination of the understanding of behavioural teaching strategies used by staff working with people with severe and profound mental handicaps. Consideration of the fundamental principles underlying such strategies can foster a flexible approach whereby staff can profitably accommodate the findings of research into learning difficulty into their teaching methods. Further, and perhaps more importantly, such an approach also allows people to integrate their understanding of behavioural methods with their other skills and experiences, both as teachers and learners.
