This article describes an advocacy scheme carried out in a day centre to elicit the opinions of people with profound handicaps through a structured interview which was part of a research project looking at quality of life. The scheme involved more able adults from the same day centre speaking on their behalf. Details of the structured guidance programme developed to help these adults act as spokesmen are described, along with a discussion of the implications of such work both for the people with profound handicaps and the people who help them to express their views.
