People with mental handicaps are not generally considered a “high risk” group in relation to the spread of AIDS. However, carers and educators have a responsibility to translate the basic messages about AIDS into a form which is understandable and appropriate for them. Some individuals who are mentally handicapped may be very much at risk through certain sexual behaviour coupled with ignorance. Many others may be caused needless anxiety because of mistaken or half‐understood ideas about AIDS. A strategy for educating people with mental handicaps about AIDS is suggested.
