Two meetings for parents and carers of people with mental handicaps were held in order to assist in the development of the new Open University course P555 Mental Handicap: Patterns for Living. The aim was to record parents' and carers' views on a variety of issues. This is the second of two articles which highlight some of the main points discussed at the meetings and report participants' views in their own words. It focuses on parents' relationships with carers and professionals, and looks at their expectations and the barriers they face. Some attitudes and approaches that parents have found helpful in establishing and maintaining effective relationships and “working with others” are listed. The article ends with notes on some of the lessons learned about running discussion groups.
