Parents play an important role in changing attitudes and creating resources. The needs of people who are handicapped are not only lifelong, but are subject to changes in the social climate and context. Just as Mencap was triggered off by a mother in 1946 so, around 40 years later, RESCARE has been triggered off by a father. “New” needs must be anticipated. In an uneven, changing society, the author suggests there is considerable value in parents and professionals working together as partners for the benefit of people with mental handicaps.
