SUMMARY The findings of a thirty month study into educational provision for children with severe mental handicaps in Bendel State, Nigeria, reveal that before suitable facilities are provided much work remains to be done to overcome the population's fear and ignorance of mental handicap and to demonstrate that people with mental handicaps can benefit from education and participate in community and family life.
