SUMMARY A one‐week in‐service staff training course was given on two successive weeks at a residential and day centre for adults with mental handicaps in Ireland; and a year later at a similar centre in England. A total of 44 staff attended. The course included lectures on the philosophy underlying the care and training of people with mental handicaps and a detailed review of behavioural techniques in learning. Course members then applied what they had learned in a series of practical exercises. Course evaluation indicated a significant improvement in members' technical knowledge of training procedures.
