SUMMARY In the second of the two articles outlining the communication and language curriculum for children with severe learning difficulties (Bell, 1984b), it was suggested that imitation might be better included as a component in a learning skills core area rather than in the communication and language core area. This article and the previous one in the series explain this assertion: the previous article defined imitation and discussed its role in language acquisition; this article examines the problems with using imitation in communication and language intervention.
