SUMMARY. This paper discusses the importance of respite care services as a community‐based resource for families of children with disabilities. Families with children living at home need a variety of support services. Respite care is an integral part of the resources which should be available to them. The development of respite care in the United States, the models of service provided, and the impact on families is discussed. The need for preservice and inservice training of respite care providers is emphasised, and recommendations are made for the content of training programmes in order that quality services can be offered.
