SUMMARY. Several spxsecial methods for teaching reading to people who are severely disabled have been developed (see Kirk, Kliebhan, and Lerner, 1978). Some of these have been designed specifically for use with people who are mentally handicapped; others are modified versions of schemes designed for mainstream pupils. The Breakthrough to Literacy scheme is of the latter type. This article reports on its use at the Canterbury Social Education Centre for adults with mental handicaps. It is concluded that a modified version of the scheme has considerable potential in such settings.
