This article addresses some of the factors in the environment (as well as problems encountered) affecting the successful transition of three people with mental handicap to an independent living situation. The factors specifically observed for clinical assessment were: the individuals' functional abilities within the “unit” environment, their observable adaptive behaviour, personal accounts by staff who worked closely with them (in both working and living environments), and, finally, some of the individuals' own personal responses.
