SUMMARY At a recent course for teachers of children with severe learning difficulties* dissatisfaction with current attempts to assist their development of communication and language skills was expressed. It was suggested that a comprehensive communication and language curriculum would help improve matters, by providing guidance in the planning of individual programmes. The development of such a curriculum, however, was seen as an extremely complex and difficult task, and there were even doubts as to whether it was feasible at all. This article, and the next in the series, presents and develops some of the ideas raised during the course.
