For several years the British Institute of Mental Handicap has organised courses for staff working with children and adults who have been described as being in need of “special care”. This term, however, is often used to describe individuals with widely differing needs. (There is a useful discussion and excellent review of the literature in Presland, (1980).) Before beginning the courses BIMH carried out a survey of schools and adult training centres in the West Midlands to establish the needs of the pupils, students, and staff. The results of the schools' survey have already been published (Taylor, Crawford, and Thobroe, 1981). This article summarises findings in respect of the adult training centres.
