SUMMARY In this article two models of care are discussed in detail. Model 1 is the traditional model, where the consultant has clinical responsibility. In Model 2 GP's would take mentally handicapped hospital residents onto their registers and the consultants would function in an advisory capacity. The advantages and disadvantages of both models are discussed. Health authorities must decide which model to follow, depending on local circumstances.
