SUMMARY. This article examines the liberalisation of attitudes to the sexuality of mentally handicapped residents and draws attention to disparities in such attitudes as a function of professional status and other factors. Potential drawbacks are considered, as is an alternative model provided by the Swedish system. The need for policy directives as an essential safeguard for staff working in mental handicap is examined, and suggestions are made as to the most appropriate sources, the legal implications, and the possible parameters of such directives.
