SUMMARY: The evidence from this study of purpose‐built hostels and hospitals for mentally handicapped people suggests that accommodation for small groups of four to six clients in their own completely separate houses would be preferred by staff and be associated with a more “homelike” environment. Units which look like surrounding ordinary housing, avoiding unusual architectural features are more acceptable to neighbours. If several houses are to be sited together, careful consideration should be given to their positioning on the site and to the positioning of any boundary walls and gateways. To encourage participation in the community, local amenity accessibility and traffic‐hazards should be taken into account before a site is selected.
