This report describes the process by which mentally handicapped people were chosen for the Priory Court Scheme in Bristol. This is a semi‐independent living scheme where residents live alone or in groups with a warden on site. Candidates were chosen following a two‐week observation period in a simulated home. “Chosen” and “unchosen” people were compared using the Adaptive Behavior Scale and the criteria of age, IQ, and length of hospitalisation.
