SUMMARY: This article describes the development and evaluation of a practicable, assessment‐linked, early language training programme ‐ comprising the Early Language Profile (ELP) and an itemised set of training ideas ‐ suitable for mentally handicapped children from the earliest stages of development up to the emergence of a more complex syntax.
