Summary This project demonstrated that it was possible to organise and maintain an effective learning environment at ward level for high dependency female adults. The important aspects of the project may be seen as: firstly, the organisation of the residents into small, family‐sized groups; secondly, the allocation of named members of staff to each of the groups; thirdly, the organisation of weekly meetings to discuss management issues and monitor progress; and finally, the correct choice of activities for each of the residents.
