SUMMARY This study examines some effects of environmental design in two new day care centres for mentally handicapped adults. Problems in organising activities were greatest in large, open areas; highest levels of staff‐resident interaction and resident engagement being found in smaller, enclosed rooms. Resident engagement and staff‐resident interaction were generally unrelated to staffing levels. Facilities for residents and staff to work together on a one‐to‐one basis were inadequate.
