Summary This article gives an outline curriculum of a course for staff working with mentally/visually handicapped (MVH) people based on experience gained from BIMH courses already held. Some of the needs of the MVH are discussed and staff training activities are described. Severe visual handicap is found in probably 5–10 per cent of mentally handicapped people in the UK. It is suggested that there is an urgent need for the provision of in‐service training for staff who work with this group and an expansion of the course programme offered by the British Institute of Mental Handicap.
