This paper reflects the views and practice of the social workers and community nurse who operate from the newly opened Gloucester Centre for the mentally handicapped in Peterborough. The Centre is the responsibility of the Cambridgeshire Area Health Authority, though links with Cambridgeshire Social Services Department are formally established, not only in joint planning and funding but in the close cooperation and professional understanding that exists between different professions in face to face work with parents.
