The present study investigated the relationships between personality traits, awareness of disability, individual resources, personal values, living conditions and quality of life, in 619 persons with intellectual disabilities. Happiness, a positive view of life and stress were used as quality‐of‐life criterion variables. The results showed that happiness and a positive view of life were associated with a positive self‐image and others' view of self, with self‐esteem, and with a sense of autonomy. Feelings of stress were associated with a lack of self‐esteem, desire for autonomy, female gender, and awareness of disability.
