We describe a young women with Munchausen syndrome whose repertoire of simulated presentations includes mental handicap, bereavement, suicidal ideation, psychosis, epilepsy and acute abdominal emergency. Although this is the first report of Munchausen syndrome presenting as learning disability, there may be many similar unrecognised cases. Mental health professionals need to be aware of the possibility of this diagnosis. Studies are needed to determine the frequency of such presentations and to assess the implications for service planning and provision.
