Aim To investigate the outcome of therapeutic ovarian hormones on concurrent aphthous stomatitis. Background Studies of therapeutic hormones in recurrent aphthous stomatitis have shown conflicting results, mostly not amenable to statistical analysis. Methods 114 clients attending a well woman clinic were evaluated by means of a structured interview. Results Women with menstrual cycle associated aphthae were more likely to have complete or partial remission when receiving therapeutic ovarian hormones; women with menstrual cycle unassociated aphthae were more likely to have no change or exacerbation. These differences were statistically significant (p < 0.001). Conclusions The findings are consistent with the postulated role of ovarian hormones in the aetiology of menstrual cycle associated aphthous stomatitis.
