Human papiliomaviruses (HPVs) are recognized as likely viral agents responsible for genital precancer lesions and squamous cell cancers in both men and women. Nevertheless, their role in genital carcinogenesis is not entirely clear. This review aims to present current knowledge in experimental, biological and clinical work of diseases associated with HPV. There are many other agents, both non‐viral and viral, which might act synergistically or separately with HPV in a multistep tumorigenic process. This article suggests that other viral agents should be considered more fully.
