Seborrhoeic dermatitis: a clinical survey

In a study of clinical parameters in seborrhoeic dermatitis, a questionnaire was mailed to 524 patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis who had presented to the Department of Dermatology, Sahlgrenska Hospital, Göteborg, Sweden in 1988. Of the 82% patients who replied, 55% were males and 45% females. The mean age was 47.2 years. The patients were asked about age at onset of the disease, duration, distribution and severity of the disease, seasonal variation, influence of environment, physical and psychological status and concomitant diseases. It has to be taken into consideration that the data obtained in this study represent a hospital survey. Many patients experienced improvement of the disease in the summer and after sun exposure. No particular environmental factors were indicated by the patients as influencing the disease. There was a significantly higher incidence of seborrhoeic dermatitis in patients' parents than in spouses. The results of the questionnaire indicate that an hereditary factor is involved in the pathogenesis of seborrhoeic dermatitis.
