In his keynote address to the International Forum on the Social Science – Policy Nexus held in Argentina and in Uruguay in February 2006, Alain Touraine stressed the dominance of capitalism within contemporary processes of global change. He argued that, as a result, the distance between the forces of global economy and the social and political universe has grown to such an extent that major social institutions have fragmented and splintered. Anis A. Dani's reply to Touraine expresses a more positive view of globalisation which, when account is taken of the diversity of regional impacts and perspectives, offers opportunities as well as challenges. In particular, the need for states to work together on issues of common concern may offer answers to many of the concerns raised by those sceptical of market‐led globalisation.
