Migrants in Great Britain have a different and unequal health experience to the rest of the population. Some of this is likely to be related to social and environmental factors, such as poverty and unemployment. But how far ethnicity by itself contributes to the final picture is not known. The main reason for this is the lack of routine ethnic monitoring in the health service. The ethnic monitoring methods and several pilot studies are briefly discussed. Parallel monitoring of ethnicity and socioeconomic status would probably be the only way to clarify the situation.
