John T. McNaughton is one of the least understood of the major American officials involved in formulating US policy towards the Vietnam War. This article uses a newly discovered journal by McNaughton as well as his private papers to examine the reasons for his opposition to the Vietnam War and to suggest that his perceived image as a ‘hawk’ is inaccurate.
