‘Vietnam wird zur Hure gemacht’: Women, Victimhood and the Vietnam Conflict in West German Writing 1

The Vietnam conflict catalysed the FRG's protest movements in the 1960s and 1970s, and a symptomatic reading of texts associated with the conflict provides insight into the complex positions both of those movements and of the FRG itself. Sexual politics proves to be a key issue within such writing, to be explored here through images of women. These images feature most frequently in poems protesting about the Vietnam conflict and in journalism and travel memoirs, which sometimes represent women in apparently strikingly different ways from the poems, at times as an embodiment of Vietnam. Subsequently the essay considers images of women forced into sex work, an interest shared by almost all the texts examined here, as well as possible reasons for this interest. The elaboration of a nightmare in a notebook of Peter Weiss's about a Vietnamese woman who both embodies the nation and is forced into prostitution highlights the ways in which this image may form part of a fissured and contradictory cultural fantasy, and ultimately reflect the European subject's own terror of powerlessness in the face of the forces of history. Der Vietnamkonflikt diente als Katalysator der Protestbewegungen der sechziger und siebziger Jahre in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und deshalb bietet eine symptomatische Lektüre von Texten, die diesen Konflikt behandeln, Einsicht in die komplexen Positionen sowohl dieser Bewegungen als auch der Republik selbst. In diesen Schriften erweist sich die Sexualpolitik als zentral. Dieser Themenkomplex wird hier untersucht anhand von sehr unterschiedlichen Darstellungen vietnamesischer Frauen in Lyrik, journalistischen Texten und Reisememoiren, in denen Frauenbilder gelegentlich Vietnam selbst zu verkörpern scheinen. Anschließend werden Repräsentationen von in die Prostitution gezwungenen Frauen, die in fast allen Texten vorkommen, analysiert. Schließlich zeigt die Schilderung eines Alptraums in einem der Notizbücher des Peter Weiss, in dem eine solche weibliche Figur erscheint, die widersprüchlichen Aspekte dieser kulturellen Fantasie auf, die auf eine Angst des europäischen Subjekts vor der eigenen Hilflosigkeit den Kräften der Geschichte gegenüber hinweisen könnte.
