In this paper we present a new approach to evaluating expert systems. Our conceptual framework is based on a socio‐technical model that spawned some 39 technical and contextual evaluation criteria. These socio‐technical dimensions of quality are identified, defined and supported. We suggest that the approach presented here is an alternative to the restrictive verification and validation techniques that seem to be prevalent.
