The increasing burden of government regulation on economic activity in both the United Kingdom and the United States is examined critically by Murray Weidenbaum, Mallinckrodt Distinguished University Professor at the Center for the Study of American Business at Washington University, St Louis, and formerly chairman of the US Council of Economic Advisers. He calls for the removal of government‐imposed barriers to markets in fuel, pharmacy, transport, finance and other goods and services.
