The long‐familiar notion that welfare can be supplied only by the state has confused ‘social’ thought and policy. Dr Dawson, a PhD in Philosophy at Keele University and now a teacher at a comprehensive school, argues on the contrary that the less the state supplies, the more welfare will emerge.
