This essay examines the problems of characterizing the environment or “space” in which international relations take place in the late twentieth century. Varied usages and problematic aspects of the concepts of world community and world society are considered It is concluded that social science has yet to develop standard and precise conceptual tools for describing the international space. The importance of studying changes in patterns of discourse and perception of the international context is argued.
