Summary This article deals with the Celtic penetration of eastern Europe on the basis of archaeological evidence, and particularly the typology of bronze objects, and the light which it throws on an inscription from Olbia. It examines the relationship between cultural groupings and ethnic descriptions, and sets the problem in an historical context.
