Summary. It has been suggested, on the evidence of mosaics, inscriptions, religious cults and villa plans, that a flight of capital from Gaul and Germany to Britain took place in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. Villa plans in particular have been used to support this idea; analysis shows that the specific continental connections alleged for them do not exist, and other categories of evidence give very dubious support. Only the connection established by mosaics remains, and to explain that by a flight of capital is unnecessary.
