This paper provides an overview of computer matching, one of the new forms of computer‐generated social control. Administrative and legislative developments encouraging the use of this technique are discussed. Trade‐offs between increasing regulatory effectiveness and efficiency, on the one hand, and the rights of individuals on the other are discussed. The paper concludes with a set of policy questions that are likely to inform the process of drawing the necessary balance.
